My take on this contest is a stylized, video-game oriented, representation of my adventures so far. In Level 1 (bottom right), you see a young adventurer-to-be (me) and his monster friend (my imagination) sitting outside their sheltered forest home. The young Adventurer is gesturing towards Level 2, the Big City. Level 1 represents me growing up in the forests of Western Washington and wanting so badly to begin my journey to see the world outside of my tiny hometown. In Level 2 (bottom left), the young Adventurer can be seen haggling with a Weapon Merchant, in an attempt to better equip himself for what may come next in life. His monster companion is nearby, engaged in play with the local children. Level 2 is a representation of my time immediately following high school, when I moved to Seattle and attended the Art Institute of Seattle, earning my degree and "equipping" myself artistically speaking. I didn't take my time during undergrad 100% seriously, which is why half of the duo is engaged in business while the other half plays. Level 3 (middle right), the Guild Ruins, depicts the now adequately equipped Adventurer and his companion fully engaged in battle with a monstrous creature on the bridge. The ruins look to be in the middle of a wasteland. Level 3 represents my time following undergrad, when I moved to Texas and attended the Guildhall at SMU, earning my Masters degree. If you've ever driven across Texas, then you've experienced the hundreds of miles of nothing that surround every city in that state, hence the wasteland surrounding the structure. The monster in this section of the piece represents the Master Thesis process, which can be daunting. Level 4 (top left), the Kingdom of Sun Worshipers, shows the now seasoned Adventurer marching towards the Kingdom's gates, his companion and the spoils of their recent battle in tow. Level 4 is a representation of my move to California for my first full-time game-art job after graduating from the Guildhall. Level 5 (top right), the Void, depicts the older and wiser Adventurer and his companion sitting on the edge of a floating landmass and gazing into the distance. This final section represents where I am right now in my artistic journey and life; following a recent lay-off, everything was thrown into upheaval and now I don't know where I will end up or when I will get there. All I know is that my journey is far from over. Thanks for taking the time to look!
